Couple Of The Week

Ricky* saw Tanya for the first time at his cousin’s wedding. She seemed to be one of the crew of younger girls who was milling about, generally being helpful, distributing sweets and hanging flowers. He knew she was not from the groom’s side, because he was, and he would have known her, so he assumed she was a friend of the bride’s younger sister. All evening, he tried to get closer to her, to even catch her name or introduce himself, but there seemed to be too many things to do. He says he can even remember what she was wearing, a turquoise blue salwar kameez, with silver spangles down the sides.
Up close and personal
Tanya noticed Ricky, but her first impression wasn’t so favourable. She didn’t like the way he kept staring at her. Finally, she asked her friend, the bride’s sister, who that boy was, and why he kept tossing glances in their direction. “That’s Ricky,” said her friend, “He’s lovely, very charming and helpful.” Despite this good recommendation, Tanya still didn’t want to know him. What sort of name was Ricky? And if he wanted to talk to her, he should have just come up to her and said hello.
The last day of the wedding, a reception for the happy couple, was also Ricky’s last chance to talk to Tanya. Both of their work for the wedding was done, and she was sitting at a table with a few of her friends, eating a late dinner. “It was now or never,” Ricky says he was thinking, “I was still so shy about talking to her, but I had to, or I might have never seen her again.” He went up to their table and amidst the teasing of the younger girls, asked her to dance. Much to his amazement, she agreed.
Tanya said what had decided it for her was a scene she had seen earlier. A small girl, not more than four or five, had fallen down and was wailing, her parents nowhere in sight. Ricky had gone up to the child, picked her up, comforted her and found her parents. “Anyone good with small children is good enough for me,” Tanya says now, and then, shooting a suspicious glance at Ricky, “Unless you bribed her to fall down just then.” But Ricky just laughs and refuses to answer the question.
The two of them have been together for three years, and recently were married. No small children were harmed in the making of their wedding.
