OpenCulture, an online website committed to curating free media, has recently compiled a collection of 375 free eBooks — in formats that can be read on Apple’s iBooks and Kindle apps for the iPad/iPhone, the Kindle and Nook readers, and on your PC. Open Culture also collects audio books, free online courses, free movies, and free language lessons.
You read that correctly — they have 375 high quality classics! Most of these books are available on other sites on the net, but now they are compiled in one place. The list of eBooks includes links to the popular e-reader formats, and the range of titles goes from Aeschylus’s “Prometheus Bound” to Émile Zola’s “Therese Raquin“.
This alphabetical list of classics is a goldmine for avid readers, literature majors, teachers, and ebook collectors. Some notable titles on the list include Robert Louis Stevenson’s “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde“, Davide Thoreau’s “Walden”, Sun Tzu’s “The Art of War“, Victor Hugo’s “Les Miserables”, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby” and Mark Twain’s “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn”, (required readings for most U.S. high school students), Frantz Kafka’s “The Metamorphosis”, and Emily Bronte’s “Wuthering Heights”.
The book list also contains an embedded YouTube video on how to load these ebooks on to the Amazon Kindle.
Many of these eBooks can also be found on Amazon, Project Gutenberg, and other similar sites. But OpenCulture’s list of eBooks seems to be the most comprehensive and easy to access. The site also lists a whopping 450 audio books for free download as well.
