Engaging the team is a good leadership trait. Some leaders hardly engage their teams and therefore are ineffective. Others over-engage their teams and never reach any conclusions or decisions. That can also slow things down and can be frustrating.
There are times when decisions have to be taken without engagement. In these circumstances, not making a timely decision can lead to dire consequences. Here, the leader has to step up and make the call. In most cases, engagement is possible and should be encouraged. The leader should however realize that not everyone will be on the same page, and he or she will have to make the call if a consensus cannot be reached. The important thing is that the team should feel the engagement was real, and not done just as a 'lip service'.
